About this Tier-1 Service Provider

This customer is a leading wireless broadband provider in a significant European market. Its network is an alternative to traditional telecommunications networks,providing radio access for voice and internet services via wireless modems installed in each subscriber’s home, in areas that lack fixed infrastructure. It is the first Wireless Internet Service Provider in its region and was the first operator there to launch a WiMax-based voice and broadband service. It serves  thousands of municipalities, a considerable land area, and reaches almost 30 million peopleOur DSL service provider is the national telecommunications carrier of the country, established in the 1990s, and today serving close to 146,000 customers. As the leading provider of high-speed broadband service, the operator offers unlimited downloads, Internet on the go, and much more. Broadband and mobile broadband service plans are available throughout the country, including underserved areas, making the Internet accessible, affordable and safe for everyone.

The Challenge

The customer decided to migrate from WiMax to LTE technology. This created an opportunity to differentiate its offering by adding value through faster services, enhanced QoE and a wider variety of tariffs per service and type of content. Most importantly, it wanted to offer its customers greater connectivity speed, while reducing costs, so that customers using applications of all kinds, particularly streaming, VoIP, gaming and P2P services, would have enhanced quality experience, with no delays, drop-outs or buffering interruptions. In order to achieve this, and to successfully manage high volumes of heavy traffic, Allot was presented with an additional challenge. The solution should be dynamic, so it could be activated when each heavy traffic session begins and deactivated when each of them ends, notifying the network in both instances. This would be an industry innovation.

Solution

Allot developed a solution that precisely identifies and classifies traffic and applications so that it can apply a different QoS Class Identifier (QCI) for different types of traffic carried over LTE. This enables our customer to assign appropriate bandwidth and QoS parameters for each type, thereby facilitating traffic management and ensuring good QoS for each type, because it allows heavy traffic to reach customers quickly and seamlessly on a dedicated bearer with a guaranteed bit rate, leaving the default bearer to carry the regular web browsing traffic. Allot’s Service Gateway marks specific traffic with specific Type of Service (ToS) tags / values to mark it as requiring special treatment. A Gx interface communicating with the PCRF passes this command to a Gateway, which uses the ToS value to map the right traffic to the right bearer. When a bearer creation request is raised and a secondary bearer with a specific QCI is generated, it is dedicated to delivering differentiated QoS for different types of traffic. The innovation comes from the ability to dynamically open and allocate secondary bearers only when required, and close them when they are not in use. The QCI per type of content assures the QoE for users. Dynamic rather than static allocation reduces costs involved in sizing the solution to pre-allocated static bearers.

Deployment

Allot had already installed its Allot Service Gateway platforms in two of the customer’s key locations, to optimize its service, manage performance and traffic, control infrastructure and QoS, balance the load on its network and provide accurate, real-time usage data for service charging. Additional Allot Service Gateways were installed to help handle the migration to LTE. In response to high levels of subscriber and traffic growth, Allot’s most powerful platform, Allot Service Gateway Tera, was added to the customer’s second LTE node, along with additional capacity and additional software SMP licenses for subscriber tiered services and quota management. Furthermore, Allot’s solution includes interoperability with other parties’ hardware, to support ongoing innovations.

Benefits

Having implemented Allot’s solution, this customer is the first Wireless ISP in the world that has differentiated QoS in a different bearer for different types of traffic. As a result of adopting our innovative approach, it has:

  • Increased control Allot’s solution enables the operator’s infrastructure to control and prioritize traffic from end to end, resulting in optimized use for network resources and enhanced QoE for end-users.
  • Optimized use of network resources Allot’s solution frees bandwidth that is normally filled with high volume traffic. As this traffic gets switched to secondary bearers, our solution creates a far more efficient use of network resources
  • Developed discrete QoE per application The dynamic provision of a secondary bearer per application means that high-volume traffic is given its own bearer, switched on and off as use / need arises. This aids the optimization of network resources.
  • Improved QoE for customers Dedicated bearers for high-volume traffic ensures that it does not suffer from delays, droop-outs or buffering interruptions, and frees up bandwidth on the default bearer that facilitates the acceleration of regular web browsing. The result is an enhanced quality of experience for all customers .
